Our Worms

We’ve chosen to specialize in two species of ‘composting worms’ here at Worm Composting Canada – Red Worms (Eisenia fetida) and European Nightcrawlers (Eisenia hortensis). They are both well suited for life in a vermicomposting bin/bed, but each have their own set of advantages when used for various purposes.

There are of course other species of composting worms available for sale (elsewhere), such as the African Nightcrawler (Eudrilus eugeniae) and the Malaysian Blue Worm (Perionyx excavatus), but generally speaking the most commonly used varieties among them (such as those just mentioned) are native to tropical climates. Apart from inability to handle cool temperatures (usually perishing below 10 degrees C), they are also know to be quite temperamental – sometimes leaving a worm system for no apparent reason.
