We currently specialize in ONE species of ‘composting worm’ here at Worm Composting Canada – Red Worms (Eisenia fetida). Red Worms (aka “Red Wigglers”) are well suited for life in a vermicomposting bin/bed, and they are apparently also excellent worms for fishing (especially for trout and panfish). They can also be used as a live food organism for various amphibians, reptiles, fish and birds.
During the last couple of years, we’ve sold Red Worms in the form of “Compost Ecosystem” and “Red Worm Culture” bags. Overall, customers have been very happy with these options – but for the sake of streamlining our operation, and making things less confusing, this year we’ve decided to start selling a single “Red Worm Mix” product. For a limited time this will be priced the same as what we previously charged for “Compost Ecosystem”!
Red Worm Mix is basically worm-rich material taken from our beds and then further concentrated (excess material removed) so as to provide customers with a great starter culture for their vermicomposting systems. Aside from containing many adults, it will typically contain loads of juveniles and cocoons as well – so you should expect to see your population grow quite quickly.
Like our “Compost Ecosystem” and “Red Worm Culture” products (again- no longer available), the Red Worm Mix will also come with valuable habitat material that will help to inoculate your system(s) with beneficial microbes and other helpful composting organisms. Since it’s material the worms are used to (unlike the usual worm shipping substrate, peat moss) – it should also help them to settle in to their new environment more quickly.
